Ferrari FXX K Evo Debuts With More Aero, Less Weight

It will be available both as a package for existing cars and as a limited-edition model.

Khodrocar - After an announcement made earlier this week, Ferrari has taken the wraps off the FXX K Evo this weekend during the Finali Mondiali event at Mugello Circuit in Italy. Following in the footsteps of the FXX Evo and the 599 XX Evo, the new track-only machine from Maranello will be compatible with the existing 40 cars of the "standard” FXX K. At the same time, it’s going to be offered as an "extremely limited-run model,” though details about how many are going to be made haven’t been disclosed.

Billed as being a "laboratory car,” the new track-only model from Ferrari benefits from an upgraded aerodynamic package featuring a fixed twin-profile rear wing supported by two side fins and a central fin. All of the changes made on the outside to boost aero are the result of more than a year of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations in a bid to help the FXX K Evo generate downforce figures close to race cars that take part in GT3 and GTE championships.

Let’s talk about the numbers. Downforce has increased by 23 percent compared to the regular FXX K and that means it’s up by 75% compared to the road-going LaFerrari upon which the race car is based. At 124 mph (200 kph), the FXX K Evo generates 640 kilograms of downforce and more than 830 kg at maximum speed.

To achieve these numbers, more changes were necessary. For example, the underbody as well as both front and rear bumpers had to be resculpted to make the body sleeker than before. The engineers also made some tweaks to the suspension as it had to be tailored to the more aerodynamically efficient body. Despite the changes on the outside, the race car has not gained any weight. On the contrary, it's lighter than the non-Evo model (1,165 kg / 2,568 lbs dry), but it's not known at this point by how much.

Inside, the Ferrari FXX K Evo comes with a new steering wheel benefiting from F1-derived built-in gear shift paddles along with controls for using the kinetic energy recovery system (KERS). In addition, the screen mounted on the right side of the driver to show footage coming from the rear camera has been replaced with a bigger 6.5-inch display. An upgraded telemetry system – which includes KERS status – is also shown on the more expansive screen.

Ferrari says the FXX K Evo is the result of approximately 5,000 kilometers (3,106 miles) of development runs and 15,000 km (9,320 miles) of reliability tests. At its heart is a V12 engine producing 860 horsepower at 9,200 rpm and 750 Newton-meters (553 pound-feet) of torque from 6,500 rpm. The combustion engine works together with an electric motor good for 190 hp (140 kW) to enable an astounding combined output of 1,050 hp and in excess of 900 Nm (730 lb-ft).

Power is channeled to the wheels through an F1 dual-clutch seven-speed gearbox and there are carbon ceramic Brembo brakes at both axles to stop the car efficiently. It sits on 19-inch front and 20-inch rear wheels wrapped in Pirelli P Zero slicks and utilizes a double wishbone front suspension combined with a multilink rear setup.
