The third-generation model of the car maker's popular pocket rocket will adopt turbocharging for the first time.
Suzuki has confirmed the third generation of its hot supermini, the Swift Sport, will be revealed at the Frankfurt motor show in September.
The car maker said the model has "undergone a complete redesign and delivers an all-new level of excitement for sport minded drivers across the world.”
For the first time, the model will adopt a turbocharged engine, using a more potent version of the 138bhp 1.4-litre Boosterjet engine used in the Vitara crossover. This will replace the current 1.6-litre 136bhp engine used in the current car.
We expect all of the current traits in the first two Swift Sports to carry over to the new car, including the engaging handling, impressive body control, slick manual gearbox, subtle bodykit and low kerb weight, which could even drop to less than 1000kg; it’s currently 1045kg.
Rivalling models including the Abarth 500, it’s expected to go on sale in summer next year, priced above the current cost of £13,100.
The arrival of the next-generation pocket rocket follows the reveal of the standard Swift at Geneva motor show in March. That car, alongside more traditional engines, gets a mild-hybrid powertrain option for the first time.
The Sport’s specification is expected to echo the top-of-the-range SZ5 Swift and include a 4.2in LCD display in place of instrument dials as well as new driver assist technology including a forward detection system that uses a monocolour camera and laser sensor that can see in the dark.
They first provide the driver with a visual and audio warning when an impact is likely, before triggering autonomous emergency braking that can maximise brake pressure to avoid an impact. The technology offers lane departure warning and high beam assist, and an additional radar device enables adaptive cruise control.
